Welcome to the new look Union Ideas Network. The Union Ideas Network brings together unions and labour academics to share information and research, debate the key issues and develop contacts.

No more phoney war of cuts warnings and ministers’ counter claims, the coalition government’s comprehensive spending review is published.  The onslaught on the public sector, where union membership is at its densest, changes to the concept of welfare provision and the determination of government to develop a ‘Big Society’, all challenge the role of the union movement in industrial relations, in particular, and in society generally. Steve Davies (Senior Research Fellow, Cardiff School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University) starts our on-line discussion on CSR and the union challenge with an article in the Discussion Forum. You can respond to Steve’s paper and add links to files or websites that you think will interest other UIN members. This discussion remains open for two months at the end of which Steve will respond.

This is the first of a series of online discussions that will be hosted by the UIN with specially commissioned pieces to set up each new discussion forum.
